Three men have been arrested after police officers spotted suspicious activity while helping stranded motorists.
After spotting a car pulled up on Queens Drive shortly after 10pm, last night (8 July) patrolling officers quickly went for a closer look to see if they could help.
Realising the car had broken down they then noticed all was not as it seemed and could smell alcohol coming from inside the car.
One officer was reportedly kicked and spat at as things turned hostile but did not suffer any physical injuries.
A 31-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of assaulting a police officer, drunk and disorderly, driving whilst unfit and possession of an offensive weapon.
A 34-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon, breach of the peace, drunk and disorderly, being in charge of a vehicle while drunk, and possession of class B drugs.
A 48-year-old was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and being in charge of a vehicle while drunk.
All three remain in custody as enquiries continue.
Detective Inspector Jon Kerry, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Thanks to the responding officer’s instincts and realising something wasn’t quite right potentially dangerous weapons were recovered and a potential road traffic accident avoided.
“Thankfully the officer was uninjured but as we often reiterate police or any emergency service worker should never have to deal with being assaulted while they are simply doing their job, it’s completely unacceptable and as we’ve shown in this case anyone found to be assaulting any officer will be arrested and dealt with.”
