Nottingham’s Nadia Whittome MP takes part in Ramadan giving

To mark this week’s start of Ramadan, Nadia Whittome MP for Nottingham East, has spent this morning with local councillors and community leaders delivering dates and fruit to constituents, both Muslim and non-Muslim.

These were donated by Mohammed Salamat of L&M Store on Berridge Road. Dates are traditionally used as a way of breaking the fasting period each evening, also known as Iftar, during the holy month of Ramadan.

Nadia Whittome said:

“Many Muslims in Nottingham East and across the world can’t spend this Ramadan with their families and friends due to lockdown. I wanted to join local councillors to help my constituents observe the holy month, and I hope that this small act of solidarity and friendship has brought some light in these dark times. Thank you to the organisers and those who took part. I wish you a peaceful Ramadan.”

“We wanted to show Berridge ward residents that they’re not alone their elected representatives are still here to support. Some started fasting today and others yesterday, so on both days we gave out dates and fruit to break the first fast.”

Azeem Hanif said:

“We handed out over 300 boxes of dates and fruit, like we delivered chocolate eggs at Easter, because like Easter Ramadan is a time for coming together. It’s an opportunity to give back during a time that we’re all emotionally and physically strained.”
