Restoration of Strelley War Memorial underway as VE Day approaches

Leading infrastructure and engineering company, Avove, working in partnership with Severn Trent, provided essential funding for the restoration of a cherished war memorial located in the heart of Strelley.

After being contacted by the Parochial Church Council of the Ecclesiastical Parish, both companies were made aware of the deteriorating state of the memorial – a deeply significant symbol of remembrance and local history.

In the past two years, the Church Council has led an inspiring community fundraising effort to improve its state, organising local events and collecting donations that have amounted to an impressive £3,000.

However, professional stonemasonry assessments revealed that its condition was more fragile than first anticipated, and so Avove and Severn Trent stepped in to contribute an additional £3,000, accelerating the memorial’s successful restoration.

Both companies have built a strong reputation for their consistent support of community initiatives, working to enhance the areas in which they actively work and live. This follows the Strelley to Redhill project, where 16km of pipeline is being installed to improve the water supply to thousands of homes in north Nottinghamshire.

Martin Milmoe, Chairman of the Strelley Village Group, commented: “The village war memorial honours those who came before us and serves as an important place of reflection and community memory.

“Its fragile state has been of great concern to the community, and we have been actively stepping up our efforts to generate much-needed funding to restore it and ensure its long-term stability.

“Avove and Severn Trent’s generosity has been essential to these plans, and with VE Day approaching, the timing of the contribution is even more significant as it will provide the community with a place to pay their respects.”

Treasurer of the Strelley Church Parish Council, Mike Walters, added: “The memorial’s restoration has been a priority of ours, and with professional assessments highlighting the urgent need for works, this donation couldn’t be timelier. The cheque was presented to members of our church council, and it will be invested immediately to avoid any worsening of its condition.”

Nicholas Broughton, Senior Project Manager at Avove, added: “Once we were made aware of the memorial’s condition and the efforts of the community to improve it, we immediately stepped in to offer our support.

“Preserving Strelley’s history is crucial, so it was an honour to personally hand over the cheque with Neil Russell from Severn Trent, showing our support for the community. We are very passionate about supporting community initiatives, and it’s great to know that Strelley will benefit from our contribution.”

Severn Trent Project Manager, Neil Russell, added: “We are delighted to be able to offer our support to the restoration of this important focal point for the community. We are grateful to the Strelley residents for their patience over the past 12 months whilst we have been undertaking important works to secure future water supplies in Nottinghamshire and we hope this donation goes some way to repaying the community for their patience and support.”
