Roadside search leads police officers to drugs and cash

A roadside search in Mansfield led to the discovery of thousands of pounds in cash and large quantities of cannabis.

Response officers spotted a suspicious vehicle driving along Chesterfield Road shortly before 9pm on Saturday and began to follow it.

The vehicle came to a natural stop in Sandy Lane a short time later, whereupon the occupants were searched and a large amount of cash was recovered from the pocket of a jacket.

A hammer was also recovered from the vehicle, along with mobile phones and other evidence.

Two men were arrested on suspicion of possessing criminal property and were taken to Mansfield police station.

A subsequent search of a local property revealed even larger amounts of bundled cash and numerous vacuum-packed bags of cannabis.

The loft space at the property had also been converted for the purposes of growing cannabis.

Drugs were also found in a car parked outside the address.

The suspects were additionally arrested on suspicion of drugs offences.

Dostan Maqinaj, aged 35, has been charged with producing a Class B drug, possessing cannabis with intent to supply, possessing criminal property, and abstracting electricity without authority.

Maqinai, of Oxford Street, Sutton-in-Ashfield, appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court today (Monday) and was remanded into custody.

A 23-year-old man has been released on police bail.

Sergeant Kieran Loftus, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“This was an excellent evening’s work for all the officers involved.

“Thanks to a simple roadside search we began to uncover more and more evidence in this case and were able to take a significant quantity of illegal drugs off the streets and seize a large amount of cash.”
