Robert Jenrick MP comments on Nottingham City Council commissioners decision

The Rt Hon Robert Jenrick, Member of Parliament for Newark and former Local Government Secretary, comments on the news that the government has appointed commissioners to help run bankrupt Nottingham City Council.

Mr Jenrick said in a statement:

“The Secretary of State has made the right decision to send in commissioners to run Nottingham City Council.

“This is the sad conclusion of years of Labour misrule in Nottingham, which has wasted tens of millions of pounds of taxpayers money, tarnished the city’s reputation, and will now inevitably cost residents hundreds of extra pounds in council tax.

“When I was Local Government secretary, I appointed an improvement panel to assist the council.

“However, the Labour party’s failings have proven to be too great and the calibre of its councillors too weak for this to work. It’s now time for commissioners to run Nottingham City Council and put it on a path to sound finances and competent management.

“The destruction of Nottingham City Council by the Labour Party should serve as a warning of what would come were there to be a Labour government in Westminster.

“My constituents will be breathing a sigh of relief that they don’t live in the city, although the city’s success is important to the success of the whole region.”
