Work has resumed on a new heritage railway carriage shed at the Nottingham Transport Heritage Centre in Ruddington.
Scheduled for completion at the end of March 2024, contractors are now on site, installing tracks to connect the shed to the rest of the railway on site. Work will then resume on pouring a concrete floor inside the building which will allow it be used as exhibition venue as well as a storage shed.
The building will protect heritage railway carriages at the Great Central Railway (Nottingham) from the weather and vandalism.
£40,000 of grant funding has been awarded to Great Central Railway (Nottingham) Ltd (GCRN) from Rushcliffe Borough Council.
It comes from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) and Rural England Prosperity Fund (REPF), part of UK Government’s Levelling Up agenda, providing funding for local investment.
The money, combined with match funding from East Midlands Railway Trust and LNER (GC) Heritage Trust has unlocked a long stalled project.
Supporters have raised more than £11,500 to install a roller door on the front of the building which has now been delivered to site and is awaiting installation.
Andy Fillingham of Great Central Railway (Nottingham) said:
“We’d like to thank everyone for their generosity, donating to our shed appeal, which has allowed us to purchase a roller shutter door.
“Our original appeal was for £15,000 to allow us to fit the new shed out with power and light and we’re so close to reaching the target.”
Donations can be made at lnergctrust.org/ , the website of LNER GC heritage trust, a charity supporting the Great Central Railway (Nottingham).
The building will open for use as soon as the final works are completed, expected to be before the end of March 2024.
