Ruth Edwards MP has written and published a comprehensive “transport to-do list” for the new East Midlands Mayor.
- Ruth Edwards MP has written it for the new Mayor after speaking to residents
- £1.5 billion of transport spending must be spent in the right places, says MP
Based on residents’ priorities, it includes:
- Setting up a dedicated rapid response team to repair potholes — and making it easy for local people to report them directly through technology such as a simple app;
- Expanding rural bus services in West Rushcliffe;
- Investing in our rail infrastructure to enable more frequent trains from Radcliffe-on-Trent;
- Upgrading the M1 Junction 24 to stop traffic being re-routed onto our country roads;
- Supporting a new bridge over the River Trent for walkers and cyclists;
- Removing litter and cleaning up our roadsides regularly.
The Mayor now has a £1.5 billion transport budget to invest in local and regional projects, which has been made possible because of the cancellation of Phase 2 of HS2.
Ruth said:
“After speaking with residents and councillors, I have developed a “transport to-do list” for the new Mayor.
“It includes working with us to invest in the rail infrastructure we need so that more trains can stop at Radcliffe-on-Trent station, and expanding our rural bus services in West Rushcliffe. Top of the list though, is fixing potholes, one of the main issues I am contacted about by constituents.
“I look forward to meeting the new Mayor and discussing our transport priorities as soon as possible. She has £1.5 billion to invest in transport in our region, we need to make sure it is spent in the right places.”
Publication of the transport to do list comes after Ruth Edwards MP brought Roads Minister, Guy Opperman, to Rushcliffe to see some of the pothole repairs needed after repeated flooding and bad weather.
The Government has increased Nottinghamshire County Council’s road repairs budget by £24 million. Some of this money will be used to begin work immediately on roads in Rushcliffe. Work on Melton Road by Hickling Pastures is a particularly bad stretch, the county council has prioritised resurfacing it, and work will be completed this month.
