Rushcliffe MP James Naish, has welcomed the government’s announcement that local patients will benefit from significant investments in two GP surgeries in the Rushcliffe Primary Care Network (PCN), which are receiving £750,000 between them.
This is part of a £102 million investment by the government in over 1,000 GP surgeries across the country, creating 8.3 million more appointments each year.
James Naish said that the two Rushcliffe PCN projects are expected to be delivered during the 2025–26 financial year, with the first national upgrades beginning this summer.
He said: “Many GP surgeries could be seeing more patients but don’t have enough room or the right facilities to accommodate them. By creating new consultation and treatment rooms to make better use of existing space, these measures will help patients in parts of Rushcliffe be seen faster.”
This announcement follows confirmation that an extra 1,500 GPs have been recruited to the NHS since October 2024. The GP contract has also been boosted by £889 million and reformed to incentivise GPs to ensure that the neediest patients see the same doctor at every GP appointment.
The £102 million Modernisation Fund represents the biggest investment in GP facilities in five years and is part of the £26 billion investment in the NHS announced at the Autumn Budget.
The two schemes in Rushcliffe PCN are at East Bridgford Medical Centre and Orchard Surgery, Kegworth. The former will convert an office into a clinical consulting room and, in doing so, create an extra 12,500 appointments a year. The latter will receive a single-storey extension to create three new large clinical rooms, office space and ancillary services, creating an extra 22,500 appointments a year.
James added: “I know that there are other parts of Rushcliffe that need larger and better medical facilities, especially East Leake and Radcliffe-on-Trent. This funding stream was exclusively for smaller schemes to create additional space based on existing building footprints, but I will continue pushing for more ambitious upgrades and new health centres elsewhere in the Primary Care Network.”
Health and Social Care Secretary, Wes Streeting, said: “It will be a long road, but this government is putting in the work to fix our NHS and make it fit for the future.
“These are simple fixes for our GP surgeries, but for too long they were left to ruin, allowing waiting lists to build and stopping doctors treating more patients.
“It is only because of the necessary decisions we took in the Budget that we are able to invest in GP surgeries, start tackling the 8am scramble and deliver better services for patients. The extra investment and reform this government is making, as part of its Plan for Change, will transform our NHS so it can once again be there for you when you need it.”
