Ruth Edwards MP encourages residents to sign petition to turn Wilford Field into a nature reserve

Yesterday, Ruth Edwards MP met with local campaigners Daniel Atherton and Gordon Wheeler at Wilford Field to show her support for establishing it as a local nature reserve and to urge local residents to sign the petition backing this campaign.

The petition, which was submitted by Gordon Wheeler to Nottinghamshire County Council on Thursday 25th March, calls for Wilford Field to be designated as a Local Nature Reserve and a place of scientific interest for the benefit of the local community.

Currently, over 2150 people have signed the petition and can be found here: https://www.change.org/p/rushcliffe-borough-council-protect-wilford-field?use_react=false

In February, Ruth Edwards MP gave her full support to the petition, saying Wilford Field is a “much valued and enjoyed green space which, as well as being a natural habitat for wildlife and birds, is used extensively by local people”.

A ‘Friends of Wilford Field’ group has also been set up on Facebook for residents and supporters of the petition and already has over 100 members. The group can be joined: here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/wilfordfield

The next phase of the campaign will be to undertake a wildlife survey, to demonstrate the biodiversity of the site. Ruth is working with Friends of Wilford Field to engage a suitable organisation to undertake the survey.

Ruth said:

“It was great to join Daniel and Gordon to hear about their plans to preserve, enhance and nurture this fantastic site.

“After speaking with residents who live nearby, many told me how they discovered this valuable open space during lockdown.

“Now there is a great desire to see this area protected for the benefit of the local community – the petition that was launched is signed by over 2,000 people showing the strength of support.”

Daniel said:

“If we don’t protect our cherished green spaces, we lose them. For many, these pockets of wildlife are the reason we love living where we do.

“Protecting our parks is nothing new but, with recent rapid development across South Nottingham, it is more important than ever. I am gobsmacked by how far the petition has reached and by the unequivocal support it has received from the local community in Compton Acres and Wilford.

“We can welcome the vocal support of Cllr Gordon Wheeler and Ruth Edwards MP.  With their support, the petition and ‘Friends of Wilford Field’ group cannot be ignored. Protecting this field for future generations shouldn’t be a challenge: it should be an open door.”
