Shoplifter caught by off-duty police officer in Nottingham

A shoplifter has appeared in court after she was arrested by an off-duty police officer.

The officer was shopping at the Tesco Express store in Maid Marian Way at 2.15 pm on Monday when he noticed a person stuffing food into their pockets.

As 27-year-old Calid Short attempted to leave the shop, the officer swung into action.

Appearing at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (13 March), Short, was given a four-week prison sentence suspended for 12 months.

Inspector Paul Gummer, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “The officer in this case was not in uniform but didn’t think twice about challenging this offender.

“His actions were a credit to him and a reminder to the public that a police officer is never fully off-duty.

“Shoplifting offences of this nature cause significant harm to local businesses, and we continue to work with local partners to reduce offending and catch up with offenders.”
