Shoplifter jailed after eleven offences in two Clifton stores

A persistent shoplifter has been jailed following another thieving spree.

Jade Lawson targeted the same Clifton-based store no less than nine separate times in under a month.

Mainly snatching cleaning products from the shelves, Lawson also stole tubs of sweets too from B&M in Green Lane.

Each of the thefts happened between 8 September and 6 October, with Lawson returning multiple times on one of the days.

She also stole cases of fizzy drinks from Co-Op, in Southchurch Drive, Clifton, on 3 October and 25 October – taking her theft count up to 11.

The City South Neighbourhood Policing team was able to link Lawson to the string of low-value thefts after reviewing in-store CCTV footage.

Officers were able to recognise the 31-year-old from that, partly because of her previous history for shoplifting, which meant they’d seen her face before.

Lawson received a community order after a series of shop thefts in Clifton last August, before finding herself in trouble again for three other thefts and a burglary.

She would go on to receive a 42-week custodial sentence suspended for two years for those offences at a court hearing this May.

Having decided to ignore that warning and steal again, the shoplifter attended Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on 29 October.

Lawson, of Havenwood Rise, Clifton, admitted to the 11 shop thefts she’d been charged with at the hearing, before being released on bail with strict conditions.

She also pleaded guilty to an assault on 28 September and a separate charge of possessing crack cocaine too.

Lawson then attended Nottingham Crown Court on Monday (24 November), where she was sentenced to 86 weeks in prison.

PC Jane Gibson, of the Clifton Neighbourhood Policing team, said:

“The vast majority of shoplifting offences we deal with are caused by a relatively small number of persistent offenders.

“While the stock stolen by Lawson was of relatively low value, her decision to do what she did was unfair on both shop staff and honest shoppers who spend their hard-earned money.

“Her thieving was far from isolated, with Lawson targeting the same store nine times as part of 11 thefts in under a month.

“To make matters worse, she committed this thieving spree having only months earlier received a suspended prison sentence for similar offences.

“Having failed to heed those warnings and learn from her mistakes, it’s only right that she now be sent to prison for her actions.

“We’re pleased to see a custodial sentence be enforced, which should send a message out to anyone thinking of stealing from our shops that you will be caught and face the prospect of a spell behind bars.”
