Shoplifter jailed after targeting Sainsbury’s Local 17 times

A shoplifter responsible for a thieving spree in Sherwood has now been jailed.

The Mansfield Road-based Sainsbury’s Local was targeted no less than 17 times in just over two weeks by Jamie Kilburn.

On each occasion, Kilburn brazenly walked in, filled his pockets or a bag with items and then left without paying for any of them.

The 32-year-old repeated the trick 17 times between 23 May and 9 June – often returning to the shop to steal several times in a day.

More than a thousand pounds worth of meat, cleaning products, cheese and other stock walked out with Kilburn during his stealing spree.

After reviewing in-store CCTV footage of each of the incidents, neighbourhood officers were able to identify Kilburn as the person responsible.

He was tracked down and arrested on Monday (9 June) night, before finding himself in court facing 17 counts of shop theft.

Kilburn had by that stage already pleaded guilty to three other shop thefts from a store in Arnold on 30 May and 1 June too.

Appearing before Nottingham Magistrates’ Court, Kilburn, of Jenner Street, Carrington, admitted to carrying out each of the Sherwood thefts.

He received a 28-week custodial sentence for the 20 shop thefts.

Sergeant Rose Barton, of the City North neighbourhood policing team, said:
“Jamie Kilburn’s thieving has caused some real issues in our area, especially to one store.

“He targeted the same Sainsbury’s in Sherwood no less than 17 separate times in 18 days and I have no doubt he’d have done it again, had we not caught up with him.
“Thankfully for everyone involved, we managed to track him down and place him before the courts.

“Shoplifting is both unfair to businesses and to honest members of the community who spend their hard-earned money on their shopping.

“The sentencing passed to Kilburn this week means he won’t be causing any issues to our community for the foreseeable future, which is great news.”
