A man who used a hammer to threaten staff members in supermarkets has been jailed for more than six years.
Craig Bagley, 34, of no fixed address and his accomplice, Glynn Johnson, 33, of no fixed address, appeared at Leicester Crown Court via video link today.
Both men were jailed for the robbery of the Tesco supermarket in Top Valley in the early hours of Friday 4 October 2019.
Bagley threatened a staff member at the store with a hammer before both men left with stolen bottles of alcohol.
After a thorough investigation into the robbery, Johnson was arrested at the Premier Inn Hotel in Hucknall. He was sentenced to 15 months in prison including a five-month sentence for breach of a suspended sentence in connection with a separate offence.
Bagley was also sentenced for two further robberies, one of which occurred in a Sainsbury’s supermarket in Carrington Street, Nottingham on 10 November 2019, the other happened in a Local 4 U store in Bulwell on 15 November 2019.
In both incidents, Bagley stole alcohol and cash totally more than £800 from the supermarkets, as well as threatening staff members with violence.
In the Local 4 U incident, Bagley repeatedly smashed the door to a locked storeroom with a hammer while a staff member hid for their safety.
When he unsuccessfully gained entry to the locked room, he left the shop.
An officer from Nottinghamshire Police arrived at the scene to investigate within two minutes of the 999 call.
After an area search, Bagley was spotted and a police dog assisted an officer in safely detaining him. Upon arrest, the hammer he used to threaten staff at was recovered.
Bagley was jailed for a total of 78 months in prison for the robberies and two possession of offensive weapon charges.
