Sneinton: Armed police stop car and recover machete

Operational Support officers seized a machete and a knife after pulling over a car.

Two suspects were also detained when the Armed Policing team stopped a vehicle that aroused their suspicions.

Believing the occupants of the car could potentially be up to no good, officers brought the car to a halt in Manvers Street, Sneinton.

This happened around 12.20am on Tuesday (14 January), while both the vehicle and the two people inside it were subsequently searched.

When a large machete and a knife were discovered, the car’s occupants – men aged 37 and 49 – were arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon in public.

The 37-year-old man was then additionally arrested on suspicion of drug-driving, when a roadside drugs wipe revealed traces of cocaine and cannabis.

Inspector Christian Chell, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“The officers involved in this stop did a great job following their policing instincts after suspecting this vehicle could be involved in criminality.

“That decision ultimately led to two bladed weapons being taken off the streets and out of harm’s way.

“It really should go without saying, but there is absolutely no excuse for anyone to have either of these offensive weapons in their possession while out and about in the community.

“The same goes for anyone thinking of getting behind the wheel while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, which is an incredibly dangerous thing to do.”
