Speeding driver who killed motorist jailed for four years

A speeding driver has been jailed after killing a man in a fatal high-speed crash.

Adil Rehman, aged 32, was travelling at around twice the speed limit when he collided with another car.

Rehman was driving a Mercedes along Ilkeston Road, Radford, on the evening of Wednesday 25 August 2021, when the driver of a parked car attempted to perform a U-turn in the road further ahead.

Rehman swerved to his right but ploughed directly into the driver-side of the other vehicle, sending it spinning across the road.

Driver Arshad Rana, 66 was treated for his injuries but died around three weeks later in hospital.

Rehman claimed to officers that he had been driving at 33 mph at the time of the collision – a line he stuck to even after he was shown damning CCTV footage of him speeding down the road.

Expert police investigators evaluated the footage and concluded that Rehman had been travelling in excess of 60mph in a 30mph zone in the moments prior to the collision, with an impact speed of around 53mph.

Rehman, of Skipton Circus, Sneinton, pleaded guilty to a charge of causing death by dangerous driving and was today (Monday) jailed by a judge at Nottingham Crown Court for four years.

He was also banned from driving for a total of seven years.

Sergeant Mark Baker, of Nottinghamshire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This tragic incident could very easily have been avoided if Rehman had been travelling at the legal speed limit.

“His appalling recklessness on that day has robbed a family of a much loved husband, father and grandfather.

“I hope his conviction will serve as a warning to others about the potential consequences of this kind of driving.”
