Splendour crowned best festival in the UK

FIRST PUBLISHED

The 20,000-strong crowd were bathed in glorious sunshine all day at this year’s Splendour and enjoyed special stand out moments from performers across three music stages.

Celebrations for the special 10th birthday Splendour continue as the music event is crowned ‘Best Festival’ (cap 15,000-39,999) in this year’s national industry awards organised by Live UK.

Headliner Paloma Faith shared the Wollaton Park festival’s birthday and was touched to be serenaded by her band and the audience during her set.

The Charlatans took to the Main Stage fresh from flying back from playing Benicassim in Spain; Björn Again played an epic set with all the ABBA hits; while the disco inflections of Sophie Ellis-Bextor resplendent in silver sequins really got the main stage crowd in the party mood.

On the Confetti Stage, crowds enjoyed some Dancing in the Moonlight from Toploader and 90s indie heroes Embrace went down a storm; all before punk-era veterans and headliners The Stranglers entered.

Away from the music, there was so much to enjoy with fairground rides, Little Splendours area, fringe entertainment and a comedy stage. With the weather playing it’s part this year, it was truly a birthday to remember.

Organised by leading live music company DHP Family, MD George Akins said: “Splendour has become a staple on the Nottingham event calendar and I’m extremely proud to continue working on an event that means so much for Nottingham music. A big thank you to everybody involved and who contributed towards this year’s award-winning event, and to all the people who attended and sang their hearts out.”

DHP Family won big at the national awards, with an overall quartet of wins for its venues, festivals, shows and staff. Rescue Rooms, The War on Drugs show at Alexandra Palace and the Head of Concert Assistants and PA to Managing Director, Wai Mundia, also received awards at the Live Music Business Awards.

Now in its ninth year, the awards recognise excellence and talent among promoters, venue operators, festival organisers and agents, through to artiste managers, tour managers, show producers, brand impact and record label partnerships.
