Student flats approved as developer agrees to more parking spaces

More student housing is due to be built in Beeston after a developer agreed to increase the number of parking spaces at a new development.

Applicant The Raven Group proposed a three-storey building with nine student apartments in Ellis Grove, Beeston.

Previously, the plans were rejected by councillors who said five parking spaces for 36 students was “wholly inadequate”.

The application was brought back to Broxtowe Borough Council’s planning committee this week, with plans for 14 parking spaces.

The applicant said the the area is “highly sustainable” with a range of public transport options close by.

“Considerable” cycle storage is also proposed as part of the plans.

The area will soon be a hub of new developments after retirement apartments were approved during the January 5 meeting and a 66-bedroom care home was granted in July for the former Myfords site next door.

Residents who objected to the plans said the development was over intensive and claimed there was no need for more student housing.

One comment read: “Inappropriate development – student housing in a quiet residential neighbourhood and associated anti-social behaviour especially given will be adjacent to a care home and retirement flats.”

Councillor Tim Hallam (Lib Dem) said: “It is a marked improvement, so much so that I’m definitely going to be supporting this application.”

Councillors supported the application unanimously at a planning meeting on Wednesday, 5 January 5.
