Suspect found hiding in a kitchen cupboard weeks after ‘sustained hammer attack’ on Notts victim

Officers found the suspect hiding in a kitchen cupboard.

A 47-year-old man was taken to hospital after suffering a fractured skull in the sustained attack at a property in Sandy Lane, Mansfield, on 28 March.

He has since been discharged.

Detectives had been searching for the suspect since then and today 9 May, 2021 arrested a 31-year-old man on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm in connection with the attack.

Detective Sergeant Matt Scott, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This was a vicious and sustained attack with a hammer causing serious injuries to the victim.

“He was hit numerous times in the head with a hammer and the outcome of this incident could have easily been much more serious.

“Officers have made numerous attempts to arrest the suspect since the incident took place and have now arrested a man wanted in connection with the assault, after finding him hiding in a kitchen cupboard. He is currently in custody and is being questioned.

“Whilst it was a really serious assault, it was a self-contained incident inside a house and the two people are known to each other so there is no wider threat to the community.

“Nottinghamshire Police treats incidents of violence, particularly with weapons, extremely seriously and our officers will always doggedly seek to bring suspects before the courts.”
