Suspected drug dealer wearing flip-flops failed to outrun armed police

A suspected drug dealer with sliders on his feet tried and failed to outrun firearms officers.

The Armed Policing team were out on patrol in Carrington when a passing vehicle aroused their suspicions.

Believing it could be involved in criminality, officers switched on their blue lights and pulled the car over in Mansfield Road.

After approaching the vehicle – around 10.45pm on 18 November – police started to suspect there could be cannabis onboard.

Based on this, officers placed the driver in handcuffs and stood with him at a nearby bus stop, while the car was searched at the roadside.

Several deal bags of cannabis were quickly located inside the vehicle, with the discovery prompting police to place the suspect under arrest.

At that point, the individual suddenly sprang up and tried to sprint away – despite him having sliders on his feet and his hands still being in cuffs.

Having barely made it a few metres however – and with his flip flops flying off – the suspect fell over and was quickly detained by a pursuing officer.

The pursuing officer then pulled the – now sock-wearing – man to his feet before escorting him to the back of a police van, while searches of the car continued.

Further quantities of cannabis, as well as cash and weighing scales were all found onboard and seized.

The 21-year-old man was ultimately arrested on suspicion of possessing with intent to supply Class B drugs and driving without a valid licence or insurance.

Inspector Chris Chell, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“This drugs seizure and subsequent arrest showcased the value of the patrols our Armed Policing teams conduct each day.

“The officers showcased great policing instincts to firstly pull over a suspicious vehicle and then take immediate action when they believed drugs could be onboard.

“After immediately confirming these suspicions by locating large quantities of cannabis, officers then sprang into action when a suspect tried to run away.

“The individual didn’t get far at all though before our team caught up and placed him in the back of a police van.”
