Teenager and 19-year-old appear in court over alleged £19,000 Boots thefts

Two people have appeared in court charged with multiple shoplifting offences linked to Boots stores in Nottinghamshire.

James McDonagh, 19, of Three Cherrys Lane, Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, and a 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Monday 19 January 2026.

McDonagh is charged with theft of skincare products valued at £18,366 from a Boots store in Mansfield and £703 from a Boots store in Newark. He also faces charges of going equipped for theft in Mansfield and attempted theft of skincare products from the Boots store in Mansfield.

The 17-year-old is charged with the same offences. Both defendants face six charges.

Police were called to the Boots store at St Peter’s Retail Park in Mansfield on Friday afternoon, 16 January 2026, following reports of suspected shoplifting. Officers later stopped a van and arrested two occupants. A quantity of suspected stolen cosmetics was recovered from the vehicle.

McDonagh was remanded in custody. The 17-year-old was granted conditional bail. Both are due to appear at Nottingham Crown Court on 16 February 2026.

Detective Staff Investigator Steve Willetts, of Nottinghamshire Police, said retail crime has a significant impact on businesses, staff and communities, and that police continue to work with partners to tackle offending.
