The Friary: Christmas market and Great Wall of China walk fundraisers announced

Deb Beevers, age 67, has set herself a new challenge: trekking along the Great Wall of China to raise funds for a local charity.

A Christmas Market held at GracieB salon in Musters Road will support the effort too, GracieB owner Georgie Burrows is Deb’s daughter.

For Deb, it is an opportunity to push herself and support a cause close to her heart, all while visiting a country she has never been to before.

The trek will involve walking approximately 4-7 hours a day, navigating thousands of steps, and facing exposure to the elements along the way.

Deb will trek through un-renovated sections of the wall, featuring challenging terrain, sections at great height with drops on either side, and will stay in basic lodges each night. It will be a true test of endurance and spirit.

Deb’s chosen charity, The Friary, is based in West Bridgford and is well-known in the local area.

After visiting and meeting members of the staff and volunteers, Deb finds it incredibly inspiring to witness the positive impact of their work and their enthusiasm.

The Friary’s mission is to empower homeless and vulnerable adults to rebuild their lives by offering practical services, advice, and emotional support. They are determined to meet the needs of the most vulnerable in society, supporting individuals in recovery and advocating for those without a voice. Every year, The Friary caters to over 15,000 visits from people experiencing the challenges of homelessness, substance misuse, financial destitution, and social isolation.

Gracie B Hair & Beauty Salon is hosting a Christmas Market next door to The Friary, at 32 Musters Road, West Bridgford.

This free event invites the community to drop in for a winter warmer drink and a mince pie. The market will feature a range of artisan craft stalls, festive treats, a tombola, and homemade cakes. Visitors can also receive express beauty treatments or hair curls in exchange for a donation. It’s a chance to support local small businesses while contributing to an important cause.

Deb is looking forward to seeing the community come together for this event and supporting The Friary in their vital work.
