The New Year brings fresh hope, but at the same time, the stark reality is that homelessness is still a significant issue.
Chief Exec Ben Talbot at the Friary Drop-in centre, kindly provides an update on the situation locally.
“We all know that January is a time when money can be tight but hope that anyone reading this may be able to spare a small amount to improve the lives of the most vulnerable. FRIARY WINTER APPEAL.
The local and national authorities did a great job in providing hotel accommodation during the pandemic and with support from local charities such as the Friary, homeless individuals have been supported to find suitable move on accommodation’ says Ben.
‘It’s becoming clear there are significant numbers who have remained on the streets. Worryingly, we are seeing more and more young adults needing to access the Drop-in. Without a support network people find themselves at risk of exploitation on the streets” Ben informs us.
The Friary is more committed than ever to ensure preventative work is at the heart of their support.
‘We look to put in support mechanisms quickly to lead to healthier and safer choices. This can be support with physical/mental health, housing and benefit advice and ultimately signposting towards paid employment. No one person’s situation is the same. It is about providing an environment of calm, trust and reassurance.
