Families across the East Midlands are expected to see school-related costs reduced from September, as new guidance on branded uniforms is issued to schools and further free breakfast clubs are confirmed.
A total of 102 additional schools across the region will offer free breakfast clubs from September, including 41 in Nottinghamshire. Nationally, more than 2,700 breakfast clubs are expected to be operating after the summer holidays.
The government says more than 680,000 children across England will attend the clubs from September, compared with around 300,000 at present.
According to the Department for Education, the clubs have so far provided more than 10 million free breakfasts and five million hours of childcare. It says families using a club every school day could save up to £450 a year and receive around 95 hours of childcare.
From September, schools must also comply with new legal limits on the number of branded uniform items they can require. The change is intended to allow parents to buy more everyday items, such as trousers and shirts, from a wider range of shops and supermarkets.
The government is also publishing updated statutory guidance asking schools to take further steps to reduce the cost of individual uniform items, particularly more expensive items such as blazers and jumpers, ahead of the 2027 school year.
The Department for Education says the combined measures could reduce back-to-school costs for some families. It says a child could benefit from up to £450 a year through a free breakfast club and up to £500 a year through the planned expansion of free school meals to all households receiving Universal Credit, alongside potential savings from cheaper school uniform requirements.
