Traffic: Major electrical repair work in Nottingham may make delays worse today

FIRST PUBLISHED

Western Power Distribution must undertake emergency electrical works on Derby Road at its junction with Ilkeston Road and Alfreton Road heading towards Nottingham City Centre.

An electrical cable which supplies the High Voltage network in the city centre is at risk of failing, and while Western Power have done everything in their power to fix the problem without roadworks given the delays caused by Highways England’s A52 Clifton Bridge closure, the need to repair the fault is now critical and must be undertaken.

Works will begin on Tuesday 11 February and crews will work on the fault from 7am-7pm to repair the issue.

Due to the withdrawal of all non-emergency roadworks by Nottingham City Council, dedicated Western Power teams will be on site to rectify the fault as quickly as possible.

Councillor Adele Williams, Portfolio Holder for Adult Care and Local Transport, said: “While we have suspended all non-urgent roadworks and are working with Nottinghamshire Police at rush hour to keep key junctions clear, we will of course allow works of an emergency nature to go ahead and Western Power assure us these have to happen now.

“We really appreciate their proactive efforts trying to fix this remotely while Highways England’s works on the A52 Clifton Bridge continue and while frustrating for motorists, they have assured us a failure of electricity here would cause additional problems across the city centre and so have to be undertaken.

“What is positive is that Western Power have taken additional pressures on the roads into account, working with us to suspend all unnecessary roadworks, and so have crews available to get started – and hopefully finished – quickly. Highways England have suggested the A52 will be closed until at least Wednesday 12 February and we hope to have an update soon about what can be done on such a key route in and out of the city.

“Meanwhile, we continue to urge drivers to plan their route well in advance, use public transport and Park & Ride where they can or work from home if possible as we seek to keep key junctions clear at morning and evening rush hours along with Nottinghamshire Police. Only essential works will be permitted on the roads until the issues on Clifton Bridge are resolved.”
