Police in Derbyshire say that the truck driver ignored the red ‘x’ symbol and was over the alcohol limit.
The incident was reported today by Derbyshire Police.
The smart motorway section of the M1 had the red ‘x’ showing denoting that a live lane should not be used because there was a broken down vehicle there.
The driver tested over twice the legal limit for alcohol.

‘M1. Blue van is broken down in a live lane.
‘Red X set and lane closed.
‘Car transporter driver ignores red X and crashes in to back of van.
‘Reason? Over twice the drink drive limit, blew 80.
‘Arrested and blood sample obtained.’
