Two jailed following knife assault in Newark car park

Two men have been locked up after they assaulted a victim during a drug deal.

Louis Macanally, 19, and 18-year-old Shaun Saunders, met the victim in a car park at Morrisons supermarket, in King’s Road, Newark, on the evening of 3 February.

After a disagreement, the two launched an attack on the other man at the scene – aged in his 20s – which left him suffering a stab wound, a wound to his finger and bruising to his right eye.

Officers worked at pace that night and arrested the pair, also recovering the weapon – a kitchen knife – from the offenders’ address.

Macanally and Saunders, both previously of Kings Road, Newark, pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent and possession of a knife in a public place.

Appearing at Nottingham Crown Court on 1 October, each was jailed for two years and eight months – a sentence they will serve at a young offenders’ institution.

Detective Constable James Martin, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“What happened this night is a startling example of how the presence of a knife can instantly lead to an incident escalating to potentially more serious consequences.

“While the victim may have been involved in a criminal activity, no one deserves to be the subject of such violent and reckless behaviour.

“Macanally and Saunders should feel very lucky that the victim did not suffer any more severe injuries.

“I hope they take this time to reflect on just how differently this situation could have ended.”
