Two major archery competitions coming to the home of Robin Hood

The city of Robin Hood is set to host two major archery competitions this autumn. Nottingham has a long association with archery, from the legend  of Robin Hood right up to hosting the European Championships in 2016.

The two competitions will take place at Wollaton Park From 15 to 17 September, and it’s a great opportunity to come and watch top world-class UK and European and Paralympian archers. Spectator entry is free and there is ticketed seating for those who want to get a grandstand view. Archery GB will be bringing their have-a-go range for visitors to try their hand at the sport.

Pavlos Kotsonis, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Culture and Planning for Nottingham City Council said:

“Nottingham has a great pedigree of hosting major archery competitions and we are pleased that Archery GB has chosen Wollaton Park as the venue for the two competitions this September. We are particularly pleased to be hosting the European Para Archery Cup, which shows that archery is such an accessible sport.

I hope that the competitors enjoy Robin Hood’s home city and enjoy competing in the beautiful setting at Wollaton Park.”

The European Para Archery Cup finals will take place on Thursday 15 September and will see the best para archers from across Europe compete. GB is strongly represented by the  European and Paralympic champion and World Championship bronze medallist, Phoebe Paterson Pine, world number three Jessica Stretton and Paralympian, Hazel Taylor in the women’s competition. There is also strong representation in the men’s competition with World Team Championship bronze medallist, Jamie Harris, two-time Paralympian, David Phillips and World Championships silver medallist, Cameron Radigan.

The three disciplines are W1 (Where wheel chair-using athletes can use a variety of bows), Recurve (A bow that is shot using the fingers) and Compound (A more technical bow that is shot using a release mechanism).

The 2022 National Tour Finals will take place on Friday 16 and Saturday 17 September and will see the UK’s best recurve, compound and barebow archers shoott for the top spot on the podium.

There is a top class entry in recurve, including both male and female Olympians Sarah Bettles, Bryony Pitman, James Woodgate and Tom Hall. Bryony is also the current world number four, and she will be shooting at this year’s World Cup Final in Mexico. There will also be many world and national finalists including 2022 National Tour Finalist winner Penny Healey, 2022 National Tour Finalist winner and Olympian Patrick Huston and World Cup silver mixed team medallist Alex Wise.

In the men’s compound class there are returning favourites, including the 2019 winner James Mason, and multiple tour finalist attendees Adam Ravenscroft, and Chris White. They’ll be joined by the current National Tour Finalist winner for both 2020 and 2021, Adam Carpenter.

In the women’s competition, Phoebe Paterson Pine will come straight from the Para Finals to compete at the Finals, and last year’s National Tour Final winner Layla Annison will be shooting. Also competing are the world number one ranked woman Ella Gibson (who’ll be joining Bryony Pitman at the World Cup Finals this year), 2022 European Champion Izzy Carpenter and world ranked number eight Sarah Prieels.
