Two men sentenced after stealing £12,000 worth of goods from Ann Summers store

Two men who raided an Ann Summers store, stealing £12,000 worth of lingerie and sex toys, have been sentenced.

Jason Kamal, 48, of no fixed address, and Ashley Hillsley, 21, of Big Barn Lane, Mansfield, appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on Thursday 15 October.

Police received a call at 4.32am on Friday 14 August stating that a burglary was in progress at Ann Summers in Long Row.

The offenders were described as wearing high-visibility tops and having smashed a window to gain entry.

Police arrived within three minutes of the call coming in, at which point both men decided to make a run for it.

They were quickly detained and arrested on suspicion of burglary.

A search of Hillsley’s vehicle revealed a considerable number of Ann Summers products in the boot.

The stolen items included lingerie and sex toys valued at £12,059.

Kamal initially denied entering Ann Summers, despite his face being visible on CCTV.

Hillsley said he was bullied into taking part in the burglary and that his primary role was to act as a lookout and assist.

He was told he would receive a large sum of money and would no longer be ‘a nobody’.

Kamal was also arrested on suspicion of another burglary, which had occurred at Professional Mobile in Front Street, Arnold, on 28 July.

Kamal had left a vape at the scene of the crime with his DNA all over it, and the phone he was using was one that had been stolen from the store.

During this burglary, Kamal stole a number of electronic devices valued at around £13,000.

Both offenders appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on Thursday 15 October for sentencing.

Kamal was handed a three-year prison sentence for both burglaries, while Hillsley received a community order for the Ann Summers burglary.

Chief Inspector Kylie Davies, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“The officers called to this incident did a fantastic job of detaining two suspects within minutes of the call coming in.

“Not only that, but they also recovered the stolen items taken from Ann Summers.

“These are not mastermind criminals. Quite the opposite. They had no chance whatsoever of getting away with this crime.

“All the evidence pointed to them, leaving them with no other option than to plead guilty to the offence in court.

“Kamal was also caught for another burglary after he left his vape at the scene and was using one of the phones he had stolen.

“Business crime is not a victimless crime. Our officers carried out extensive work to ensure this case got to court and that the owners and staff of these businesses received the justice they deserved.”
