Updates: M1 closed in both directions – police incident – see diversion

Leicestershire Police have closed the motorway in both directions.

5:18 pm: All lanes have now reopened on the M1 northbound between J21A and J22 near Leicester following the earlier collision. There is still approx. 3 miles of congestion on approach, please allow extra time for your journey.


The M1 in Leicestershire is closed northbound between J21a and J22 (near Leicester) due to a collision.

Emergency services are responding at the scene and National Highways have resources in attendance to assist with traffic management.

Diversion Route

Road users are advised to follow the hollow triangle diversion symbol on road signs

  • Exit the M1 northbound at J21a and using the free flow lane join the A46 northbound
  • Continue northbound along the A46 to the A46/A50 interchange.
  • At the interchange take the first exit (left) onto the A50 Markfield Road.
  • Continue along the A50 passing through the Lena Drive junction, Bradgate Hill and Fieldhead Roundabouts to A50/M1 junction 22 interchange.
  • At the interchange take the fourth exit and rejoin the M1 northbound

 

Police said at 11 am:

‘Please be advised that the M1 between J21 and J21A is closed in both directions due to a police incident.

‘Please find alternative routes – updates will follow.

‘Thank you for your patience.’

 

AA reports at 10:18 am Sunday 8 May:

‘All lanes stopped and slow traffic due to crash on M1 Northbound from J21A A46 (Leicester North / Kirby Muxloe) to J22 A50 (Coalville / Ashby-De-La-Zouch).’
‘Severe delays of ten minutes and delays increasing on M1 Northbound between J21A A46 (Leicester North / Kirby Muxloe) and J22 A50 (Coalville / Ashby-De-La-Zouch). Average speed ten mph.’
