The Department for Education today (Thursday, 15 December) published the final, verified data showing how pupils in individual schools across all 152 English local authority areas performed this year at the end of primary school.
Marion Clay, acting service director for education, standards and inclusion said: “Given that expectations for pupils at the end of primary school (key stage 2) were raised last year through the introduction of a more challenging curriculum, we are very encouraged by these outcomes for Nottinghamshire which are closely in line with the national picture.
“These results reflect the hard work and dedication of head teachers, teachers and the wider school communities, including families, to ensure that schools in Nottinghamshire continue to deliver high quality education which has resulted in these good results.
“However, because of the changes to the curriculum and assessments this year and the new way test results at the end of primary school are now reported, the finalised results for 2016 cannot meaningfully be compared to those for earlier years.”
When compared with the county’s statistical neighbours – Nottinghamshire is placed 4th out of 10 other local authorities in the combined measure of reading, writing and Maths.
Nottinghamshire has maintained its ranking against statistical neighbours from 2015 in spite of the introduction of the new, more challenging curriculum.
Although provisional key stage 2 results for local authorities were published in early September, today is the first time individual school results for 2016 will be made public.
Coun John Peck, Committee Chairman for Children and Young People’s Services added: “I congratulate pupils across Nottinghamshire for quickly and ably responding to the challenges presented by the new curriculum which was only brought in at the start of Year 5 for these children.
“I would also like to acknowledge the dedication and commitment from teachers and parents across the county for their efforts in supporting pupils and raising standards which is borne out by the results.
“What these primary results mean is that most children in Nottinghamshire will have started their secondary education in September with strong basic skills allowing them to continue to achieve well.
“It is our ambition, along with schools across the county that achievements at the end of Key Stage 2 will continue to improve.”
How the new assessments work
The 2016 key stage 2 assessments are the first which assess the new, more challenging national curriculum which was introduced in 2014. New tests and interim frameworks for teacher assessment have been introduced to reflect the revised curriculum.
Results are no longer reported as levels, and each pupil will now receive their test results (in reading; grammar, punctuation and spelling; and mathematics) as a scaled score and teacher assessments (in writing and other subjects) based on the standards in the interim framework for teacher assessment which have been introduced to reflect the revised curriculum.
Because of these changes, figures for 2016 are not comparable to those for earlier years. The expectations for pupils at the end of key stage 2 have been raised. Given the differences in the curriculum and assessments, levels are not comparable with scaled scores or teacher assessment outcomes.
Pupils at the end of key stage 2 are expected to achieve in test subjects a scaled score of 100 (which represents the expected standard), to achieve a teacher assessment judgement of ‘working at the expected standard’ or ‘working at greater depth in the expected standard’ (in writing) and to have made progress between their prior attainment at key stage 1 (typically aged 7 years) and key stage 2 outcomes.
