Victoria Centre opens wellbeing space with playlist chosen by Nottinghamshire Mind

A new space where shoppers can take a break, listen to music and support Nottinghamshire Mind has opened at Nottingham’s Victoria Centre.

Pause Point, on the Upper Mall, features a playlist chosen by the charity’s staff and volunteers, with songs they say help them through difficult moments or lift their spirits.

Visitors can take a seat, listen to the music and make a cash donation through an interactive Plinko-style game. Funds raised will support Nottinghamshire Mind, the centre’s Charity of the Year, and its work across the county.

The playlist includes This Must Be the Place by Talking Heads, Vienna by Billy Joel, Happy Hour by The Housemartins and You Get What You Give by New Radicals.

Contributors were invited to nominate a song with personal meaning and explain how it supports their wellbeing. Their choices range from tracks associated with happy memories to music that helps them relax or feel more connected.

Nigel Wheatley, Centre Director at Victoria Centre, said: “Victoria Centre sits at the heart of Nottingham’s community, and we know that looking after our mental wellbeing is just as important as looking after our physical health.

“Through Pause Point, we wanted to create a space that encourages people to stop for a moment, reflect and prioritise their wellbeing. Hearing the songs that help Nottinghamshire Mind’s staff and volunteers through difficult days is a powerful reminder that looking after our mental health can start with something as simple as taking a moment to listen, pause and reset.

“We’re proud to be working with Nottinghamshire Mind to encourage conversations around mental wellbeing and raise funds that will help support people across Nottinghamshire.”

The initiative also aims to raise awareness of the charity’s services. Visitors can find information through Nottinghamshire Mind’s website about wellbeing programmes, counselling, peer support and crisis support.

Nicola Rea, Chief Executive Officer at Nottinghamshire Mind, added: “Mental health challenges can affect anyone at any stage of life, and demand for support continues to grow.

“What is so powerful about this playlist is that every song tells a different story. Some remind people of happy memories with family and friends, others encourage self-belief and perspective, while some simply bring joy and help people feel more connected.

“Wellbeing looks different for everyone, and these song nominations show that even small things, such as listening to a favourite song, can have a meaningful impact on how we feel. We hope Pause Point encourages people to take a moment for themselves and reminds them that support is available whenever it’s needed.”

All donations made through Pause Point will support Nottinghamshire Mind’s mental health support, safe spaces and wellbeing programmes for local people.
