Viv Anderson MBE, one of the two native sons of Nottingham in Forest’s 1979 European Cup winning side, will be back in his home town on the exact 40th anniversary day, Thursday 30 May.
Viv will be among ticket holders, fans and pub regulars at the Embankment pub to chat over old times and join the many drinkers who have already tasted ‘Viv Anderson MBE’, his Nottinghamian Celebration Ale, brewed to mark the anniversary. Proceeds from the sale of the beer, the afternoon’s raffles and donations from the public are in aid of Viv’s chosen charity, Prostate Cancer UK.
The event, organised by Nottingham’s Castle Rock Brewery, includes an opportunity to meet Viv, take selfies, and hear of those cup winning days and his life and work since leaving Forest in 1984. While all the online tickets have gone, a small number has been retained to be available on a first-come-first-served basis on the day.
For Viv, this will be an afternoon of memories. “I’m really looking forward to meeting the fans, they were great then, and remain that way now. I’ll no doubt have memories of 40 years ago and our 9 month trail to the final. Locked in my memory is when Trevor Francis got on the end of that cross from John Robertson to score the winner. It was a long time ago, but what a day we had in Munich.
“It promises to be another 30 May to remember, this time in aid of Prostate Cancer UK,” he says. “And for everyone who donates, there’s a free signed photo.”
Viv Anderson has supported the charity since 2016, when he took on their Football to Amsterdam fundraising bike ride. Since then, he has supported awareness of prostate cancer, especially within black communities, where men face a higher risk of the disease.
Gabriella Bailey, director of fundraising at Prostate Cancer UK says:” We’re incredibly grateful to Viv and Castle Rock Brewery for supporting the charity through this event and through sales of Viv’s beer. It sounds like it’s going to be a great party.
“One man dies every 45 minutes from prostate cancer in the UK, a shocking statistic that cannot be ignored. The money raised through this event will help us fund vital research into better diagnosis, prevention, treatment and support for men and their families and, in turn, will help stop prostate cancer being a killer,” she says.
‘Viv Anderson MBE’ is Castle Rock Brewery’s May to July Nottinghamian Celebration Ale. One of four a year honouring the achievements of the native and adopted sons and daughters of the city, Viv’s ale is a 4.2 per cent Pilsner-style pale beer. It is based on his own taste preferences.
The ‘Meet Viv Anderson’ event is on Thursday 30 May, 2019 at the Embankment, Trent Bridge, Nottingham from 4pm.
