Wanted criminal caught by off-duty police officer in West Bridgford Co-op

A wanted criminal has been jailed after an unexpected encounter with an off-duty police officer in West Bridgford.

Liam Davis, aged 28, was spotted stealing items from the Co-op store in West Bridgford on the afternoon of Saturday 15 August.

With no back-up or protective equipment to defend himself, the officer announced himself to Davis.

After a struggle in the Bridgford Road store, Davis was subdued before additional officers arrived to arrest him.

The reason for his defiance soon became clear when it was discovered he was wanted for other offences.

Davis, of no fixed address, later pleaded guilty to three counts of theft at the same store, two on 15 August and another the day before.

He also pleaded guilty to assaulting an emergency worker in September 2025, possessing a Class B drug and criminal damage to a police vehicle.

Appearing at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Monday 17 August, he was jailed for 16 weeks.

Sergeant Andrew Foulds said:

“This was a great bit of work by an off-duty officer who didn’t hesitate to put himself in harm’s way.

“Davis didn’t come quietly but was swiftly restrained and put before the courts for the thefts and other offences.

“The officer involved should be proud of his actions in protecting and serving the public.”
