Warning notices have been installed around two ponds in West Bridgford after blue-green algae was spotted in the water.
The algae has been reported at Kingfisher Pond and the balancing pond near Broadstone Close in the Compton Acres area.
Both ponds are in an area popular with dog walkers.
Councillor Hari Om, who represents the Compton Acres ward on Rushcliffe Borough Council, said the Environment Agency had been informed and notices had been placed around both ponds as a precaution.
The recent warm and sunny weather, combined with a lack of rainfall, may have contributed to the algae’s appearance.
Blue-green algae can produce toxins that are harmful to people and animals. The Environment Agency advises people to avoid contact with affected water and dog owners to keep their pets away.
Not every blue-green algae bloom is toxic, but it is not possible to tell whether it poses a danger simply by looking at it. Visitors should follow the warning notices installed at the ponds.
