Warning after driver stopped over three times the legal alcohol limit

The vital work of response officers was highlighted after a drink driver was caught almost four times over the legal limit.

Officers arrived within minutes of two separate reports of drink and drug drivers in Mansfield and Radford.

Reports were received of a drink driver on Southwell Road West, Mansfield, around 11.20pm on July 1.

Officers found a man standing outside a property who was unsteady on his feet and smelled of alcohol.

Although he said his car was at home, officers checked with the control room and discovered the vehicle was parked nearby.

The 56-year-old provided his car key to officers who walked to find a Ford Fiesta further along the road. The keys unlocked the car and the tyres and bonnet were warm to the touch.

Officers suspected that the man had been drink driving and conducted a roadside breath test where he blew  a reading of 123 micrograms of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35mcg.

In Radford, an officer was patrolling along Radford Road at around 2.50am on July 2 when he was alerted to a motorist’s poor driving.

As the officer approached the junction with Wilkinson Street, he noticed a Ford Focus brake heavily at the red traffic light that overshot the stop line.

After stopping the driver, the man behind the wheel of the car, who was fidgety and struggled to hold up his head, appeared to be under the influence of drugs.

He refused to leave the car to conduct a roadside drugs wipe and was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drugs.

The man, also aged 56, was searched at the roadside and a set of electronic scales with a white powdery residue and a deal bag were found and seized.

He was further arrested for refusing to cooperate with a roadside drugs wipe procedure.

When he was searched in custody, a quantity of white powder, believed to be cocaine, and a tin foil ball of cannabis were found. He was then arrested on suspicion of possession of Class A and B drugs.

He also refused to provide a sample of blood for a drug analysis and was further reported for failing to provide.

These arrests come as Nottinghamshire Police is set to shine the spotlight on the fine work of response officers across the county later this month as part of a week of action.

PC Paul Pugsley, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “These arrests are just another example which showcases the importance of our officers being out on the roads to keep the public safe and crack down on offenders.

“There is no excuse for anyone to get behind the wheel of a vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

“This severely inhibits a driver’s reaction time, which puts both pedestrians and motorists at risk of harm.

“We would always encourage anyone who suspects someone might be under the influence of drink or drugs to call the police immediately.”
