Warning after handgun found hidden in mattress in Nottingham

Police have issued a warning after a handgun was found hidden inside a mattress during a police search.

Officers executed a warrant at an address in Hucknall Road, Carrington, shortly after 4.30pm yesterday (Thursday) in response to community intelligence.

During a detailed search of the property they found the weapon secreted inside a mattress.

Investigations are ongoing and the weapon has been taken away for further examination. Drugs and mobile phones were also recovered from the property.

Two men, aged 31 and 33, were arrested on suspicion of firearms offences and remain in police custody.

Detective Sergeant Nigel Malik, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Firearms offences are thankfully rare but are treated with the utmost seriousness by Nottinghamshire Police. As a result we take a very proactive approach to removing illegal weapons from our streets.

“If we receive intelligence that firearms or illegal weapons are being stored at a location we will take swift action to ensure they are seized and that suspects are investigated.

“So if you are in possession of a illegal firearm it is not unlikely that we will find out about it and pay you an unexpected visit.

“I would also urge anyone who is aware of someone who may be in possession of an illegal firearm to contact Nottinghamshire Police on 101, or 999 in an emergency. They can also call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
