Warning after uncapped mineshaft discovered during headstock restoration works

Broxtowe Borough Council is warning residents to take extra care around the works at the former Brinsley Colliery site off Mansfield Road.

A spokesperson for the council said:

‘As progress continues on the re-construction of Brinsley Headstocks, a survey has identified an uncapped mineshaft at the site.

‘We have erected Heras fencing around the perimeter, notices have been put up to ask visitors to stay away from the area and lighting will be on in the evenings to ensure the site is safe.
Checks of the site will be carried out on a daily basis.

‘A structural engineer will also attend the site. There is the possibility that the fenced area could be expanded if required.

‘Therefore, we are politely asking anyone that plans to visit the site takes extra care to stay away from the fenced off area as necessary works take place.

‘Thank you for your co-operation.’

Brinsley Colliery, off Mansfield Road near the village of Brinsley, north of Eastwood, was opened around 1842 and closed as a working pit in 1934 when the seams were exhausted. The shafts were kept open until 1970.

The site has since been reclaimed and is now a picnic site and conservation area, located within the Greenbelt.

Local campaigners, including the heritage group Friends of Brinsley Headstocks, had previously called for the return of the landmark.

Plans drawn up by the authority will see the landmark rebuilt as a full wooden structure at a cost of £220,000.
