West Bridgford barber describes how Covid has affected the business

1

Warren Kent has operated Warren’s Barber on Gordon Square in West Bridgford since March 1995.

We spoke to Warren about how the lockdowns had affected his business and staff, and how he feels about the future.

Warren said:
‘The lockdown has affected all businesses especially those who have been forced to close.

‘Like most businesses I was forced to close for trading on 30th December.

Warren explained that although his staff are self-employed his business success supports them and their families.
He said: ‘This has been especially hard on those with young children with universal credit and support grants helping to plug a hole in their finances but often falling short of covering all their expenses.’

Rushcliffe Council have granted the business a Lockdown Grant to meet the ongoing needs of the business such as rent and other costs.

Warren feels that although grants paid to businesses through local councils from central government grants are really helpful, they won’t last for long.

‘Due to government advice we now operate an appointment system (currently CLOSED)  which has helped customers and staff feel safe during their visit. Appointments  can be made by creating an account through our website warrensbarbershop.com or by downloading an app called NEARCUT.’

‘Last year I took out a bounce-back loan to assist with the business cashflow and expenses, without which I think I would now be out of business. Although the terms of these loans are very favourable they are still loans and will need repaying over a 6-year term starting from July 2021.’

‘I think the team and I have learnt a lot of lessons through the many lockdowns and  we will continue to offer the best service we can in a covid secure environment once we can reopen.’

‘I think the future of our industry is going to be hard with Covid precautions here for a while longer. But this pandemic has taught us all how important LIFE and people are, so when the business reopens it will be with a sense of gratitude from the amazing customer support we received during lockdowns and the fantastic team we have at Warren’s.’
