West Bridgford Football Club – A review of the 2018 / 19 season

PUBLISHED:

A fantastic turnaround in the second half of the season gives West Bridgford FC many reasons to be optimistic.

After 17 league games, West Bridgford sat in 19thplace in the league, with just 7 points to their name. By the end of the 38 game season they had amassed 51 points and climbed to 13thplace in the league.

The turnaround can almost entirely be attributed to the managerial change that took place in October.

Ryan Doherty was appointed, Doherty who had previously only managed at Step 7 immediately started overhauling the squad.

By early 2019 only 5 players remained from those that had started the season and it was a much improved, stronger Bridgford side that competed in the second half of the campaign. Doherty and his coaching team of Danny Walsh, Chris Galley and Chris Withe settled into the role and certainly proved any doubters wrong.

This West Bridgford side had a strong team ethic running throughout and simply never knew when it was beaten. They developed a very useful knack of scoring late, decisive goals with no less than 7 games settled by Bridgford winners scored in the last few minutes.

Notable wins came against the then third placed side, Radford, with a 3-2 win, a 2-0 victory away to a strong Eastwood side, a 2-1 win at home to Kimberley and perhaps the most impressive of all, a 2-1 win in the final home game of the season against second placed Newark Flowserve.

West Bridgford finished the season with 8 wins from the last 10 games. A stark contrast to the way in which they started the season.

With the news that due to the creation of an additional Step 4 league, next season will see four teams promoted from the East Midlands Counties League, the season 2019/2020 can’t come soon enough for the boys at Regatta Way.
