West Bridgford Labour Party has strongly criticised the County Council plan for a feasibility study into building a new secondary school and rebuilding Lady Bay Primary school on the fields to the east of Lady Bay.
The Conservative-led Council has agreed to pay outside consultants around £500,000 to report on the proposal, which would involve building on the River Trent flood plain.
Mike Scott (Rushcliffe Labour Press Officer) said:
“There is no justification for spending such a large sum of money on this, especially at a time when the Council has announced the closure of three Children’s Centres. If the Conservatives really want to consider building on the flood plain, they can carry out their own study. This is a blatant misuse of public money, which could have been used for much-needed children’s services.”
The County Council has made several unsuccessful attempts to get the land between Lady Bay and Regatta Way re-zoned for development over the years – all have been rejected by Rushcliffe Borough Council.
Building on the flood plain is highly controversial and West Bridgford Labour members will be considering a recent survey of Lady Bay school parents and carers at their next meeting on March 23rd.
This showed 74% against moving the popular school and 78% in favour of a partial rebuild on the current site if more space was required in the future.
Also under consideration will be the launch of a wide-ranging public campaign against the whole proposal.
