West Bridgford local businesses team up to cover costs of life-saving defibrillator

Residents and visitors in West Bridgford will continue to have access to a defibrillator on Central Avenue thanks to two local businesses.

Up until now the running costs have fallen to Central News & Cards following the installation of the defibrillator outside the store in 2022.

Moving forward Specsavers, also on Central Avenue, have agreed to split the costs.

Stephen Rogers, retail director at Specsavers West Bridgford, says; ‘It’s really important for us to give back to the community in any way we can. Although we hope that it won’t happen, anyone of us in the community could need a defibrillator. It would be great if more of our fellow businesses were able to get involved and contribute to the running costs too – we are happy to chat to anyone who is interested in getting involved.

‘Having access to a defibrillator can save someone’s life so we hope that by continuing to provide this essential equipment will help make a difference if the worst happens,’ continues Stephen. ‘The quicker a defibrillator is used, the higher the survival rate. Providing defibrillators so they can be accessed by the local community have a huge impact in an emergency.’

According to the British Heart Foundation, less than one in 10 UK people survive an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. This is mainly due to there being not enough people prepared to perform CPR and there not being a defibrillator nearby.
