West Bridgford mum opens art school for children

A West Bridgford mum-of-two has opened an art school for children and adults keen to develop their passion for creativity, away from the fast-paced modern world.

Helen Woodford launched Create! West Bridgford this summer after a successful 15 year career as a secondary school art and ceramics teacher in Leicestershire.

I set up the business to get back to creative basics – making and creating rather than paperwork and a constant focus on data and statistics,” says Helen, 38. “Create! West Bridgford is about art and craft for all, for any age group or ability. I love to work with a wide range of people. Running my own business also gives me more flexibility as a parent. I have two daughters, aged 4 and nearly 2, and I can work around them and put their needs first.”

Run from Helen’s own modern, purpose-built art studio, Create! West Bridgford offers pre-schoolers a range of art and craft based sessions with a weekly theme.

I opened the business in July with a children’s summer school. It was very popular,” continues Helen. “Weekly themes included zoo, space, seaside and rainbows. The kids produced some great work, and parents were happy that any mess was made in the art school, rather than at home!”

Create! West Bridgford’s After School Club on Tuesdays and Wednesdays are for school age children who wish to develop their skill-based art and gain a greater understanding of materials.

Helen’s adult classes are painting and drawing based – studying technique while looking at artists and movements. “It’s about taking time out of your busy life and making some ‘me time’,” adds Helen. “It’s the pleasure you gain from learning new skills or developing existing ones.”

Create! West Bridgford will also be running one-off workshops on Christmas crafts (printing your own Christmas cards, felt decorations, gifts for grandparents and wreath making).

An experienced teacher trainer during her secondary school teaching career, Helen also has a consultancy side to her business. She is keen to visit nurseries and schools to help them develop and deliver a fun and varied art curriculum.

You can get in touch with Helen at Create! West Bridgford via her business website and social media links, where you can also watch her short art class taster videos.
