A woman has been arrested following the death of a 20-month-old in Mansfield.
Nottinghamshire Police was called just after 6.30am on Friday 6 March to a report of concerns for the welfare of a child at a house in Wharmby Avenue.
The child was taken to hospital for treatment before being pronounced dead a short time later.
A 25-year old woman has been arrested in connection with the child’s death. The woman remains in police custody this afternoon (Saturday 7 March).
Police have maintained a strong presence at the address since the time of the incident, as detectives and crime scene investigators continue their enquiries at the scene.
Detective Chief Inspector Rob Routledge, who is leading the investigation, said: “Any death of a child is a tragic incident and I understand the concern this will cause within the local community.
“However, I would like to offer some reassurance that there is no threat to the wider public and that an extensive police investigation is now underway to understand the circumstance surrounding this tragic case.
“I would encourage anyone with any information to come forward as soon as possible as any information – no matter how small it may seem – could assist our officers.”
