Woman robbed and left unconscious in Nottingham alleyway

A repeat offender who robbed a woman and left her lying unconscious in a Nottingham alleyway is back behind bars.

Darren Unwin had been released from prison just two months before he targeted the victim as she walked along Diversity Way, Radford, at 11.40pm on 16 August 2023.

He grabbed the woman in a headlock, dragged her from the pathway and stole her handbag which contained a bank card.

The victim later described to police how she blacked out and came round feeling confused and frightened.

Detectives were able to identify Unwin as the offender after analysing CCTV footage from nearby streets. He was captured on camera starting to follow the victim on Ilkeston Road.

After the robbery, he was then caught on CCTV entering a nearby shop where the stolen bank card was used.

Unwin, of Nottingham, was given a 14-year extended sentence when he appeared at Nottingham Crown Court for sentencing on Friday (27 October 2023). This includes a nine-year prison sentence and a five-year extended licence period.

The 30-year-old pleaded guilty to one count of robbery. He had previously been jailed in 2017 after being convicted of two robberies.

Detective Sergeant Lisa Jones, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This must have been an extremely upsetting ordeal for the victim who was attacked in the dark as she walked home after a night out.

“Detectives worked hard on this case, and I hope the sentence handed down today provides some comfort to the victim and reassurance to the wider community about how seriously we treat this sort of violent offending.

“The case also once again shows the value of CCTV cameras in helping detectives to identify offenders like Unwin and bring them to justice.

“It is quite clear from his behaviour that Unwin has not learnt any lessons from his previous time behind bars.

“I am pleased the judge has again seen fit to take him off the streets.”
