Works begin on new cycling route on St Ann’s Well Road Nottingham

Works began last week to create a safe segregated cycling route along St Ann’s Well Road, following digital and in-person consultation events.

The works will start at the junction with St Ann’s Valley (Heron Foods) and will progress along St Ann’s Well Road towards the city centre.

The first section of works will take four weeks to complete.  During the works, traffic lanes will be narrowed and some of the bus stops will temporarily be suspended. As the construction work progresses along St Ann’s Well Road, the latest information will be available via the Transport Nottingham website.

The entire project is expected to be completed by Spring 2024.

The St Ann’s Well Road Cycling Corridor scheme is expected to deliver a number of benefits including:

  • Dedicated separate cycle lane to enable safer cycling
  • Re-alignment of junctions and upgrade of traffic calming features to reduce vehicle speeds
  • Support a longer-term increase in active travel mode share by complementing the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan
  • Contribute to improving air quality and meeting Nottingham’s 2028 Carbon Neutral objective.

This route will add to the safe, segregated cycle network around the city, with the east-west cycle route – where a cycle path is currently being built on London Road roundabout before works move onto Bellar Gate – as well as a future scheme on Porchester Road also in progress.

This scheme is being delivered using grant funding which Nottingham City Council successful bid for from Active Travel England’s ‘Active Travel Fund’ (ATF) – Active Travel England (ATE) is the government’s executive agency responsible for making walking, wheeling and cycling the preferred choice for everyone to get around in England.

Councillor Angela Kandola, Portfolio Holder for Highways, Transport and Planning said: “It’s great to see works begin on a safe segregated cycle route on St Ann’s Well Road as we continue to work to develop and join up our cycle path network in the city centre.

“This new protected cycle route will enable thousands to make safer cycle journeys, connecting even more of Nottingham’s communities with our cycling network.”
