£25m package to fund street cleaning, family support and youth services in Nottingham

Nottingham City Council is delivering on its promise to citizens, with a major package of investment set to transform frontline services, support families, and boost pride across the city.

Following the recent approval of a balanced budget with a £25m investment package, the Council is now moving ahead with the first wave of frontline service investment – putting millions back into the things that matter most to people’s everyday lives.

The new proposals will see funding directed towards cleaner streets, better access to services, support for families, more opportunities for young people, and a renewed focus on community pride and wellbeing.

This is the first phase of a wider programme of investment, made possible by the Council’s strong financial management and improved funding position following the Government settlement, which has created £7.6m of additional resources to reinvest into delivering the Council Plan.

The package includes a wide range of measures designed to make a visible and meaningful difference across Nottingham, including:

Free bulky waste collections to tackle fly-tipping and keep neighbourhoods clean,
Investment in deep cleaning and extended street cleaning hours across the city,
Free holiday swimming sessions for under 16s to support healthier lifestyles,
Free sanitary products in public spaces to tackle period poverty,
Support for school uniform costs for families,
Increased face-to-face customer service support for those who need it most,
Investment in apprenticeships and economic development to create jobs and opportunities,
A strengthened programme of free events and activities to boost civic pride.

Together, the investment represents a major step forward in delivering the Council’s commitment to cleaner, safer, and more inclusive communities.

All proposals have been rigorously developed and tested to ensure they deliver real impact and value for money, aligning directly with the Council Plan priorities of delivering for local people, strengthening communities, and leading Nottingham forward.

This investment builds on the Council’s recent progress in stabilising its finances and creating the foundations for long-term improvement.

Councillor Neghat Khan, Leader of Nottingham City Council, added:

“Nottingham and our residents deserve a council that is ambitious for all who live, work, and visit here. We are continuing to move forward, delivering on our promises and building back Nottingham.

“Over the past twelve months, this council has been focused on investing back into vital services, improving outcomes, and reversing over a decade of social injustice. We know there is more to do, but our message is clear – this is just the start, with further proposals to follow as the Council continues to deliver its plan to build back Nottingham.”

Councillor Ethan Radford, Executive Member for Finance and Resources, said:

“When we set our budget, we were clear that our priority was to protect and improve the services that matter most to our communities, and that is exactly what we are doing.

“We said we would become a renewed Council that delivers for local people and leads Nottingham forward. By putting our finances on a stronger footing and reinvesting in our communities, we are delivering on that commitment.

“This investment is about making a real difference in people’s everyday lives – from cleaner streets and better access to services, to supporting families with the cost of living and creating more opportunities for young people.”
