Every neighbourhood in the East Midlands will have named, contactable police officers from July 2024, as the government rolls out its plan to restore visible, community-focused policing across England and Wales.
The region will also receive 193 additional neighbourhood police officers and PCSOs within the next year to tackle local residents’ most pressing crime concerns.
From July, residents across the country will benefit from three improvements under the government’s Neighbourhood Policing Guarantee:
- Named officers for every area, with a guaranteed 72-hour response to all enquiries.
- A dedicated antisocial behaviour lead in each force, working with communities and businesses to deliver tailored action plans.
- Increased patrols in town centres during peak times to ensure a stronger police presence where it matters most.
By April 2026, the East Midlands will receive:
- Up to 35 additional officers for Derbyshire Constabulary.
- 35 extra officers and 21 new PCSOs for Leicestershire Police.
- 49 extra officers and 3 new PCSOs for Northamptonshire Police.
- 30 extra officers and 20 new PCSOs for Nottinghamshire Police.
This forms part of a national uplift of 3,000 neighbourhood policing staff next year, backed by a £200 million government investment.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said:
“The foundation of British policing has always been bobbies on the beat, yet too many communities now feel abandoned as crime spirals. People deserve to feel safe, but without local officers they can turn to, yobs and criminals have been left unchecked.
“Our Neighbourhood Policing Guarantee will end this postcode lottery, ensuring visible, trusted policing for everyone—no matter where they live.”
By the end of this Parliament, the East Midlands will see its share of the 13,000 extra officers being deployed across England and Wales by 2029. These officers will also gain new powers under the Crime and Policing Bill to clamp down on street crime and antisocial behaviour more effectively.
The impact of targeted, data-driven policing is already evident in Leicestershire, where a dedicated hotspot patrol team has delivered impressive results, including:
- 147 arrests
- 107 stop searches
- 10 missing persons found
By working closely with local agencies, the team has driven measurable reductions in city-centre crime and serious violence, proving that intelligence-led patrols work.
This investment marks the first step in the government’s Plan for Change and Safer Streets mission, designed to:
- Rebuild trust in local policing
- Cut crime and antisocial behaviour
- Make the East Midlands a safer, stronger place to live
