West Bridgford boy builds own trailer and launches gardening business

Mack Thomas, 16, from West Bridgford has built his own bike trailer to support his own gardening business.

Mack says he has loved gardening since he was 2 years old.

It all started when he was 14 and started helping out neighbours by offering to cut their hedges for them, over time Mack has more customers as the business started to build.

He printed off some business cards and flyers to promote his skills and make it a proper business.

Mack told us: ‘As I expanded people from further and further away wanted me to go along and cut their hedges, at first this was ok because mum and dad drove me to the jobs, but this year it has got so busy I didn’t want to keep asking them.’

Mack decided to build his own trailer so he could use it with his bike to get to gardening jobs.

He started to build the frame first, then found an old broken shopping trolley dumped in a skip.

Mack said: ‘I chopped off the top part of the trolley, and mounted it on my bike trailer frame, it was perfect for holding all of my tools. I ordered a cycle towbar off ebay and fitted some drainpipe tube to hold brushes and rakes.’

‘When I’m riding my bike and trailer people stop and watch me ride past, some smile, some honk their horns, some laugh and others look confused!’

Mack has over 40 clients now, works around the West Brigford area and is looking to employ someone to help him. He also offers lawn treatments.

He plans to get into landscaping in the future.

So if you need your hedge cutting call Mack!
