Two men are behind bars after they brutally attacked two people on a stag weekend in Nottingham.
Deepak Kumar and Shaan Tanner were arrested minutes after officers found their victims lying unconscious in Market Street.
The assaults took place at around 4.30am on 28 August 2021.
Both Kumar, 36, and Tanner, 21, denied inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent but were found guilty by a jury earlier this month.
At Nottingham Crown Court today (5 June), Kumar, of Ringway, Southall, Middlesex, was jailed for 14 years and Tanner, of Lansbury Drive, Hayes, Middlesex, was imprisoned for seven years.
The trial heard both men told detectives they were acting in self-defence – claims that were dismissed by the police investigation and ultimately the jury.
In the shocking CCTV footage capturing the incident, Kumar is seen being heavily involved in knocking both victims unconscious and then attacking them on the ground, while Tanner was captured punching the older victim and then kicking him to the head.
Kumar was convicted of two counts of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm with intent and Tanner was found guilty of one count of the same charge.
Both victims, then aged 41 and 42, were taken to Queen’s Medical Centre. The older victim suffered a brain injury that continues to affect his cognitive functioning, while the 41-year-old was left with a chipped cheekbone and hearing issues.
Following the sentencings, Detective Constable Rob Marsden, who led the investigation, said:
“This was an appalling display of violence that has absolutely no place in our night-time economy. The victims in this case were simply trying to find their hotel while on a stag party when they were brutally set upon by these men.
“They offered no violence and stood no chance of defending themselves against the onslaught of blows that followed, and unsurprisingly suffered serious injuries as a result.
“As their attackers begin significant prison sentences, they must continue to live with the physical and emotional impact of what happened to them that night.
“I hope these sentences provide them with at least some comfort, and also serve as a warning to others about the potential consequences of this kind of violence.
“Incidents like this often start and finish very quickly, but can have life-long consequences for everybody involved.”
