Wollaton Hall stable block and bothys get £295,000 repairs approved by city council

Wollaton Hall’s Stable Block and Bothys are set to undergo urgent repair works after Nottingham City Council approved a £295,000 programme of health and safety improvements.

The Grade II* listed buildings, part of the city’s rich heritage, will receive essential maintenance following structural surveys that identified pressing concerns with the roof and associated areas.

The work will be funded entirely from approved reserves, meaning no additional borrowing is required.

Wollaton Hall, an Elizabethan mansion completed in 1588, is surrounded by 500 acres of parkland. Its Stable Block and Bothys, designed to serve the estate’s operations, are key features of the site. The Stable Block, with its distinctive brickwork and original courtyard, has long been used for visitor facilities, staff offices, and museum storage. The bothys — small outbuildings historically used by gardeners and estate workers — are now part of the Hall’s heritage and education offer.

In recent years, the council’s Senior Structural Engineer has carried out routine inspections. The latest survey found a number of defects in the roof and other structural areas that pose both safety risks and the potential for further deterioration if left unaddressed. The repairs are deemed urgent, not only to protect visitors and staff but also to safeguard the buildings’ contribution to Wollaton’s heritage business plan, which generates significant income for the city.

The £295,000 spend is classified as revenue expenditure and has been approved by the council’s Spend Control Board. Procurement will follow the council’s financial regulations to ensure best value, with supplier selection carried out alongside procurement specialists.
